Attending a quality drug rehab program is the safest way to overcome a substance use problem. If you or a loved one struggles with addiction, treatment involving cognitive behavioral therapy could be the best solution. Before you commit to treatment, you need to assess your substance use and options with the proper recovery staff. What is cognitive-behavioral therapy? How will this treatment make a difference in my path to sobriety?
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps with addiction triggers to rebuild your life. Sessions are managed by a mental health counselor who can offer valuable insights into addiction and recovery. Individuals can also expect to learn stress management techniques and small behavioral changes that have a track record of helping people avoid relapsing.
Why Is Talk Therapy Important?
Oftentimes, addiction is used as a way to avoid personal problems or past traumas. When drug use becomes an escape during periods of depression, it can be almost impossible to break the habit. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a method of psychotherapy that allows people to change their cognitive approaches to affect meaningful and profound behavioral changes. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is often used to treat the following conditions:
- Depression
- Bipolar disorder
- Panic disorder
- Severe anxiety
- Substance use disorder
The foundation of this collaborative treatment is based upon a trusting relationship between the counselor and the client. Sessions focus on specific and achieving thought and behavior goals while working through negative experiences and setbacks. This helps patients develop self-esteem and a positive outlook towards recovery.
