People in early recovery often experience frustrating bouts of insomnia. Swimming laps or taking part in water aerobics are gentle ways to get your heart rate up during the day. Humans are physical beings—from an evolutionary perspective, we aren’t built for sedentary lifestyles. Having an active daytime routine helps regulate circadian rhythms to promote deep, restful sleep over time. Sleeping well is essential to people working to manage mental health and addiction concerns.
Being immersed in water is calming, whether you float or just sit and think. Aquatherapy fosters tranquility and calmness. If you are interested in learning about how aquatic therapy can support your recovery, contact our outpatient addiction treatment center by calling 866.262.0531.
Aquatherapy As Part of an Integrated Treatment Approach
Participating in activities in a safe, inclusive, progress-centered environment has massive healing power. Integrated therapy activities help clients practice mindfulness. Examples of integrated therapy include, but are not limited to, the following therapeutic options:
- Aquatherapy, swimming, and water aerobics
- Hiking, forest bathing, and being in nature
- Music, sound, and instrumental therapy
Participating in these activities can allow people to relax and focus on the present. They also promote new thinking patterns, attitudes, and stress tolerance. Aquatherapy is an especially beneficial therapy option for people with limited mobility, balance, and stamina. You can enjoy aquatic therapy benefits in a number of ways. You might swim in a pool or connect with nature by wading in a lake or the ocean.
Physical Therapy and Fitness Training During Rehab
Integrated therapy aims to help balance the mind, body, and soul through physical and sensory activities. It involves more than talking with a therapist, although psychotherapy is essential for an effective addiction treatment plan. Aquatherapy is one example of an integrated therapeutic approach, but it is by no means the only option. Types of aqua therapy include the following:
- Water aerobics
- Swimming laps
- Synchronized swimming
Rehab for drug and alcohol addiction often involves various types of therapies. Holistic treatments are increasingly popular as part of an integrated rehab plan. Aquatic therapy is one example of an integrated therapy approaches we offer at Crestview.
What Are Some Benefits of Aquatherapy?
Each type of therapy has advantages. Individual counseling gives people the chance to talk through and confront difficult issues in a one-on-one setting. Group therapy allows participants to share in a non-judgmental environment and get a different perspective on their issues. Aquatic therapy benefits people in the following ways:
Stress Reduction
Physical activities like aqua therapy have been shown to reduce stress. Compared to other fitness activities, aqua therapy is considered low-impact, meaning there is a low risk of injury. Aqua therapy as part of an addiction treatment program promotes relaxation and reduces stress.
Encouraging Mindfulness
A quiet aquatic environment can help eliminate distractions to help people focus only on the present moment. Being immersed in water has an immediate calming effect. Aquatherapy can also help you relax and release tension in the body.
