Inclusive Portland Addiction Treatment
Drug and alcohol abuse affects people of all ages and demographics. For members of the LGBTQ+ community, addiction is just as damaging. Individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender have more complex issues tied to addiction. An LGBTQ+ addiction treatment program can be especially beneficial for people who struggle to be accepted.
The LGBTQ+ Community and Addiction
Why is there a need for LGBTQ addiction treatment? All too often, people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community don’t feel accepted or understood. Sometimes, their own families reject them due to their sexual orientation. Other times, they may suffer discrimination or violence. This may be at school, at work, or in recreational activities. Our addiction treatment and the sober living community at Crestview are inclusive to everyone whose lives have become unmanageable due to addiction.

People whose gender identities don’t fit the norm may feel the need to look for an escape. They may also turn to drug and alcohol abuse as a way to fit in with their peers, even if it’s not something they want to do. However, this need to connect with other people is something we all crave.
Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to fall into drug and alcohol addiction in order to cope with stigmas and discrimination. While some non-LGBTQ+ people in recovery have a strong family support system, many LGBTQ+ individuals do not. They often feel alone and ashamed. The right LGBTQ addiction treatment treats the substance use disorder and shows individuals how worthy and important they truly are.
What an LGBTQ+ Addiction Treatment Program Does for Participants
If you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, you don’t want LGBTQ+ addiction treatment that simply tolerates you being there. Naturally, you want to feel accepted and recover alongside others who are in similar situations. By taking part in an LGBTQ+ substance use treatment program that’s sensitive to your needs, you gain the full benefits of treatment.
An LGBTQ+ addiction treatment program can provide the following benefits for participants:
- A sense of belonging
- Connecting with peers
- A place to feel comfortable and accepted
- A safe and empowering space
Above all, an LGBTQ+ addiction treatment program should make individuals feel safe and supported. This may also be the first time you’ve ever felt this way.
Find Your Tribe
Instead of escaping into drug and alcohol abuse, you’ll learn to cope with negative emotions in positive, productive ways. Our individual counseling, group therapy, and family counseling programs are designed to dig deep into the core issues contributing to dependency.
While your sexual orientation won’t change, what will change is how you manage stress, bad days, and tough times.
Not every rehab facility offers an LGBTQ+ addiction treatment program. If you want a rehab where you feel completely comfortable, look into centers that offer a solid program for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals. The more comfortable you feel in rehab, the more benefits you’ll gain from it.

Relapse Prevention
Of course, avoiding parties, bars, and gatherings where drinking is prevalent is a given if you are new in recovery. Attending a meeting, even more than one per day if necessary, can stave off urges, boredom, and loneliness. Nevertheless, many communities and organizations offer healthy activities such as “fun runs” and 5Ks for local charities, military tributes, outdoor markets, parades, and much more. In these programs, our therapists and counselors don’t just lecture and rattle off statistics. Each member of our team is committed to making your treatment experience as positive and inclusive as possible.
